Smooth McGroove Performs A-Cappella Arrangement of Lake Hylia from Twilight Princess

With Breath of the Wild a mere month away, I figured there’s no better way for me to emotionally prepare myself than by revisiting Link and Midna’s seminal journey. I popped in Twilight Princess HD yesterday and began the refreshingly grueling Hero-Mode-Plus-Ganondorf-Amiibo Challenge.

Coincidentally, YouTuber Smooth McGroove had a somewhat similar idea, albeit one steeped more in artistic expression and effort — y’know, beyond trying to beat a video game. Known for his a-cappella arrangements of classic video game music — including Midna’s Lament — he’s produced some of my favorite fan renditions out there.

His latest piece is none other than the Lake Hylia theme from Twilight Princess. Perfectly capturing the “nostalgic fantasy feeling” that McGroove references in the video description, this is an arrangement that I could listen to on loop for hours. Head past the jump and give it a listen!

Zelda Universe Hosts Contests to Bookend Zelda’s 30th Anniversary

2017 may be here, but we’re still about six weeks away from the end of The Legend of Zelda’s 30th anniversary year. With that said, fan site Zelda Universe saw fit to close out the festivities with a series of contests dedicated to the series’ multifaceted fandom.

Each Monday, beginning tomorrow and running up until Feb. 19, a new contest centered on a specific aspect of Zelda fandom will open up. For instance, this first one is dedicated to individual collections, while the following week’s contest is all about fan art.

The ZU team’s ten favorite entries from each week will receive a special reward, courtesy of Nintendo Australia: prints of three of the series’ most iconic pieces of official artwork, each boasting gold foil and the 30th anniversary logo.

For the full details, as well as a look at the unique prints themselves, head over to Zelda Universe. With Breath of the Wild — fingers crossed — just around the corner, these contests should serve as an excellent reminder of why we fell in love with Link’s adventures in the first place. Best of luck to all of the participants!

Check out Zelda Universe’s Twilight Princess: English Dub

Last month, fellow fan site Zelda Universe launched one of its most ambitious projects to date on its YouTube channel: a cinematic re-editing of Twilight Princess that features full-fledged English voiceovers. The overall presentation showcases a deep reverence for the source material, with the performances in the first chapter alone being top-notch.

That said, the most recent entry, which released just yesterday, is particularly noteworthy for its introduction of Midna. Based on the handful of fan-dubs I’ve watched throughout the years, this actress’s performance offers the most convincing portrayal of the mischievous imp yet. Her tone is often condescending enough to sympathize with the perpetual snarl on Link’s face, yet playful enough to remain endearing.

Hit the jump to check out the first two chapters of Twilight Princess: English Dub, and definitely share your thoughts in the comments below!

PeanutButterGamer Begins Zelda Month by Hacking Twilight Princess

Another November, another Zelda Month! Since 2011, YouTuber PeanutButterGamer has dedicated this month to producing unique — and often hilarious — Zelda content.

Similar to how last year’s festivities began with some Skyward Sword hacking, Zelda Month 2016 kicks off by giving Twilight Princess the same treatment. The result is a nightmarish trek through Hyrule, with giant heads, a particularly freaky Midna, and corrupted musical tracks abound. Head past the jump to see for yourself!
