The Legend of Zelda: In the Past or in the Making?

Sounds pretty cryptic right? I was looking through the board and I noticed this Zelda theory section so I thought I'd post my thoughts and get your opinion on the same question I've been asking myself.

Now, Zelda wouldn't be a Zelda if the player didn't have any interaction within the virtual environment Link (or occasionally other) inhabits - that would be a Zelda movie. But a while ago I had a thought: "If this is the Legend of Zelda, are we making the Legend or is there an external figure recounting the trials of Link and Hyrule?

I have very little to support my theory that Zelda games are an account of a fictional land's past other than the game opens with narration - Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Wind Waker are fine examples of opening narration before leading in to the current story.

In contrast, the game itself could be the continuation from the story narrated before game play begins.

Your thoughts?
