Depends on OS. XP is easy: in Command prompt, write chkdsk/f then type y. Restart. That'll schedule a disk check upon loading Windows.

Same thing in Vista. Thanks for the tip. ^_^

Okay, something's been wrong with my computer ever since I got it for Christmas last year. It's the damn internet connection. After about two hours or so the internet connection drops down to 1 mbps, but it doesn't end there. It will log me out of the internet and log me back in every few minutes or so. I've ran all virus checks, all computer deficiency problems and so forth, but the problem persists. And I know it's not the router, because I'm about ten feet from it.

"Q13: I have installed the driver and restarted the computer, but I still cannot get online. What can be the cause of the problem?

Ans: In order for the WLAN card to operate properly, three conditions must be met:

1. 1. hardware—the driver is compatible with the operating system, has been installed and configured properly, and is not in conflict with drivers of other devices;
2. connection—connection has been properly established; and
3. signal—being within range of the wireless network.
Therefore, the probable cause of your problem might be:
1. 1. the driver is not compatible with the operating system;
2. the connection has not been properly established;
3. there is a hardware conflict, especially with a (wired) network card; or
4. the computer is outside the range of the wireless network, or the signals are too weak or have been distorted due to interference."

Now, your wlan card still works most of the time, which is cool. Unfortunately, I'm inclined to believe it's not entirely compatible with your operating system. The same thing happens with my card, and at a more frequent rate. Don't think the manufacturers took the time to code a new driver for Vista.

I'm assuming I going to have to buy a new WLAN card. I'm using Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN which I thought would be compatible with Windows XP. That seems to be the only reason at the moment since I am in range, there is no interference, and the connection is established.

I dunno, as far as I know wireless on xp just does that. Any computer I've used with xp that connects to the internet wirelessly has always just cut out every so often.

Now that you mention it. Some of the school's computers are XP and I have heard them logging out of the 'net very much.

Well, at this point, buying another computer (That's not XP) would cost way too much. So I guess I'll have to endure this loss. Thanks anyway Dak and Kyle.

What brand is your router btw? Also do you pick up a lot of signals from neighbors routers and such?

I know I was having that problem and fixed it by updating the driver on the laptop connecting wirelessly and also by changing the frequency of my router to be different then my neighbors routers. Try those two things.
