Nintendo Discusses Inspiration Behind Midna’s Design

With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC Pack 1: The Master Trials a mere three days away, Nintendo has begun a series of blog posts highlighting the latest additions to Link’s equipment. Today’s entry should be of particular interest to anyone visiting this site, as it’s all about you-know-who.

Art Director Satoru Takizawa not only discusses the function of Midna’s helmet in Breath of the Wild, but he also sheds more light on the process of designing the Twilight Princess herself. Seriously, it’s brief, but fascinating stuff. Give it a read after the jump!

Nintendo Treehouse Plays Breath of the Wild’s Master Trials DLC

Nintendo Treehouse spent virtually the entire afternoon today playing upcoming Switch and 3DS content, including Breath of the Wild’s first DLC pack.

Throughout the stream, they show off the latest additions to Link’s wardrobe — from Midna’s Helmet to Majora’s Mask — as well as a closer look at the Cave of Ordeals-inspired Trial of the Sword. Of course, it’s all punctuated by some infectiously enthusiastic commentary from the Treehouse team. Check it out after the jump!

Zelda Producer Eiji Aonuma Embarks on a Quest

Although I try to not get too caught up in companies’ marketing strategies, the way in which Nintendo has communicated with its fans has just been infectious throughout the past few years. From Reggie Fils-Aime hiring a child as his successor to Bill Trinen’s donut escapades, the company has exhibited a refreshing sense of showmanship.

There’s just something inherently endearing about seeing the CEO of a video game company either act like a complete doofus or present himself with such childlike enthusiasm. I get that it’s all done with the end goal of selling a product, but it’s a form of presentation I wholeheartedly welcome nonetheless.

That said, Nintendo just released a couple of videos chronicling Twilight Princess director and Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma’s heroic trek through the frozen wilds. Throughout his adventure, he encounters not only one of Breath of the Wild’s Guardian enemies, but also the Master Sword itself. Take a look after the jump!

Smooth McGroove Performs A-Cappella Arrangement of Lake Hylia from Twilight Princess

With Breath of the Wild a mere month away, I figured there’s no better way for me to emotionally prepare myself than by revisiting Link and Midna’s seminal journey. I popped in Twilight Princess HD yesterday and began the refreshingly grueling Hero-Mode-Plus-Ganondorf-Amiibo Challenge.

Coincidentally, YouTuber Smooth McGroove had a somewhat similar idea, albeit one steeped more in artistic expression and effort — y’know, beyond trying to beat a video game. Known for his a-cappella arrangements of classic video game music — including Midna’s Lament — he’s produced some of my favorite fan renditions out there.

His latest piece is none other than the Lake Hylia theme from Twilight Princess. Perfectly capturing the “nostalgic fantasy feeling” that McGroove references in the video description, this is an arrangement that I could listen to on loop for hours. Head past the jump and give it a listen!
