Smooth McGroove Performs A-Cappella Arrangement of Lake Hylia from Twilight Princess

With Breath of the Wild a mere month away, I figured there’s no better way for me to emotionally prepare myself than by revisiting Link and Midna’s seminal journey. I popped in Twilight Princess HD yesterday and began the refreshingly grueling Hero-Mode-Plus-Ganondorf-Amiibo Challenge.

Coincidentally, YouTuber Smooth McGroove had a somewhat similar idea, albeit one steeped more in artistic expression and effort — y’know, beyond trying to beat a video game. Known for his a-cappella arrangements of classic video game music — including Midna’s Lament — he’s produced some of my favorite fan renditions out there.

His latest piece is none other than the Lake Hylia theme from Twilight Princess. Perfectly capturing the “nostalgic fantasy feeling” that McGroove references in the video description, this is an arrangement that I could listen to on loop for hours. Head past the jump and give it a listen!

Check out Zelda Universe’s Twilight Princess: English Dub

Last month, fellow fan site Zelda Universe launched one of its most ambitious projects to date on its YouTube channel: a cinematic re-editing of Twilight Princess that features full-fledged English voiceovers. The overall presentation showcases a deep reverence for the source material, with the performances in the first chapter alone being top-notch.

That said, the most recent entry, which released just yesterday, is particularly noteworthy for its introduction of Midna. Based on the handful of fan-dubs I’ve watched throughout the years, this actress’s performance offers the most convincing portrayal of the mischievous imp yet. Her tone is often condescending enough to sympathize with the perpetual snarl on Link’s face, yet playful enough to remain endearing.

Nintendo Minute Shares Favorite Zelda Games, Gives Shoutout to Midna

This past weekend, Nintendo Minute hosts Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang celebrated Zelda’s 30th anniversary with a rundown of their top three favorite entries in the series. Although there is some overlap — Skyward Sword is on both lists — this video highlights how the franchise as a whole has managed to attract people with radically different tastes.

Yang praises Twilight Princess as her No. 1 pick, and attributes much of the game’s brilliance to everyone’s favorite mischievous imp. Indeed, the air of mystery that surrounds Midna throughout most of the adventure was one of the driving factors of my first play-through.

Check out the video itself after the jump, and be sure to share your top three favorite Zelda games in the comments below!

Wolf Link-Midna Amiibo Functionality in Breath of the Wild Revealed

Since Twilight Princess HD was announced back in November, fans have speculated how the Wolf Link-Midna amiibo would function with Link’s next proper adventure. Thankfully, yesterday’s stream of Breath of the Wild gave us the answer.

It’s been confirmed that the amiibo will bring Wolf Link himself into the new title’s vast overworld. Considering that the game lacks a proper companion character, this acts as the next best thing. There’s no Midna to accompany Wolf Link, but it’s an excellent addition nonetheless. Take a look for yourself after the jump!
